Kallistra (see links page) manufactures a hex based terrain system called Hexon II. The system includes base tiles and the hills, rivers, roads etc needed to create a range of battlefields.
The photographs on this page show the ready flocked version, using Kallistra’s green / earth colour option. This sand and flock mix helps break up the formality of the hexes.
Each tile is about four inches across (flat to flat). A table measuring 60” x 44” can hold a hex field of 14 x 12, with the hex grain running width ways (see photograph left). This requires a standard Hexon box of 21 tiles plus a further 9 tiles, which can be bought individually.
Each tile is formed from 6 hexes. They are hollow, which keeps them light and allows for easy stacking and storage. Although Hexon in the first instance is a terrain system, the fact that it is hex based means that the hexes themselves can be used to regulate such things as unit facing, movement, weapon ranges and blast radius. Converting some hex based boardgames over to figure games ( such as GMT’s Command & Colours) using this terrain is no effort at all.
Because all of the terrain modules can be bought in their raw polymer state (i.e not flocked), the buyer can replicate any environment from arid dessert, to the open seas, to deep space. With minimal modeling skills, specific modules can be created for built up areas, graveyards, wheat fields, rice paddies etc. The customer photo gallery on the Kallistra web site contains plenty of ideas, showing the true versatility of this system.
